Holiday Potluck Supper, 6:00, Thursday Dec 12th

Our December Meeting ...  is a Christmas Party Potluck, Thursday, Dec 12th, 2019,
at 6:00 p.m.

Hello!
Like last year, for our December meeting, we're having a festive potluck dinner. We'll meet, as usual, in the "LRC" — the Learning Resources Centre — under the Britannia VPL library. Note that, because it's for dinner, we'll start at 6:00.

Please bring:

  • Food to share. But please don't bring a dish that requires a stove, oven, or sink. We're partying in our regular meeting room, the LRC, and it has no kitchen facilities.
  • Your own plate, silverware, and a glass or cup.
  • Whatever you'd like to drink...
  • Your partner, if you like...

No need to RSVP! Hope to see you there!

Questions? Send us an e-mail at grandviewgardenclub@gmail.com.

Our November meeting...

Our November Meeting ... Thursday, Nov 14th, 2019, 7:00 p.m.

Hello!

Our guest speaker for November is Margaret Cadwalladr, who will talk to us about her recently published book, A Secret Garden: The Story of Darts Hill Garden Park.
Darts Hill Garden is the result of over 70 years of work and dedication by Francisca Darts. Along with her husband Edwin, Francisca turned a logged-off piece of land into an award-winning orchard and then into the unique garden that is Darts Hill today.
You can read more about the garden here: https://dartshill.ca/
In 1994, the couple donated their 7.5-acre garden to the City of Surrey and its citizens on the condition that they could continue to live out their lives there. Their intention was to give Surrey its own garden to be used as a horticultural centre for the preservation, enhancement, and development of plants.

After Edwin died, Francisca stayed on until her death at the age of 96 in December 2012. Today, the Darts Hill Garden Conservancy Trust Society works in partnership with the City of Surrey to maintain and enhance the garden.

A bus load of GGC members visited the garden in September. This month's meeting will give all of our members an opportunity to appreciate the garden and the story of the Darts' achievement.
Margaret's book will be available for sale. If you wish to buy a copy, please bring $29.95 in cash.

GGC meets in the "LRC" — the Learning Resources Centre — which is under the Britannia VPL library. As you're walking west toward the library, veer left on the walkway, walk alongside the library, and you'll come to a ramp entry to the LRC on your right. We start at 7:00 and end before 9:00.

We always have tea and goodies and a few door prizes. Try to remember to bring your own teacup. See you there!

Our October Meeting ... Thursday, Oct 10th

Our October Meeting ... Thursday, Oct 10th, 2019, 7:00 p.m.

Hello!
Hope you're coming to the GGC meeting on Oct 10th to hear Paul Kroeger talk about Death Cap Mushrooms in BC. The Death Cap Amanita phalloides is a deadly European mushroom introduced to North America with imported trees. It was first found in BC in 1997 and in Vancouver in 2008. Patterns of distribution may help explain how this important fungus spreads with horticultural trees and how it got here originally. I describe the detective work that yielded interesting clues and discuss some possible implications of what we’ve found.

Paul Kroeger
Paul Kroeger has studied mushrooms for over forty years and is a founding member of the Vancouver Mycological Society. He’s considered a leading expert in field identification of mushrooms of western Canada and has made a special study of  “little brown mushrooms” including magic mushrooms and their relatives. He’s been involved in many projects and studies about diverse aspects of mushrooms; gaining knowledge about fungal biology and ecology, and biochemistry of toxic, hallucinogenic, medicinal and edible mushrooms. Years of experience create unique insights and understanding of fungal life-ways and interactions in temperate ecosystems.

If you have any mushrooms you'd like Paul to identify for you, bring them along — if possible, bring the actual mushroom, not a photo!
GGC meets in the "LRC" — the Learning Resources Centre, which is under the Britannia VPL library.

September 12th meeting — Botanus!

Hello!
Hope you're coming to the GGC meeting this Thursday, Sept 12th. Our speakers come from Botanus, a Langley-based bulb-order company. They have an extensive catalogue, both online and on paper. As well, they will be bringing some bulbs to sell — "at great prices"! Sales will be cash only — so bring some cash if you might be keen. Here's what they have to say about their presentation:

‘Fall’ in Love with Unusuals

Fall is the time of year to get in the garden and start planting all the classic bulbs you remember from your childhood…it’s also an exciting time to dig in and plant some very different offerings. These may be different and new to you, but we guarantee you will ‘fall’ in love with them in the spring.
At Botanus we love the classics but we also love the new and not so classic. With this presentation we want to encourage you to be daring and try something new this fall, something that will give you plenty to talk about next spring.
So join us for a fun-filled evening as we introduce you to the history of, and interesting information about, unusual bulbs. These are the kind that you plant in the fall, get to love all spring long, and actually enjoy for years to come in your garden!

The Grandview Garden Club meets in the "LRC" — the Learning Resources Centre, which is under the Britannia VPL library.

Meeting May 9th — "Rain Gardens"

"A rain garden is any landscaping that filters and absorbs stormwater (rainwater) runoff from a nearby impervious surface such as a roof, driveway, parking lot, or street."

Deborah Jones from Cougar Creek Streamkeepers in North Delta/Surrey will be our speaker for May. She will show us how she and her group have inspired residents to improve their gardens by channeling run-off from their roofs, and how they have involved Delta Council and local schoolchildren in turning unused strips of public land into thriving habitats for plants and wildlife.

As usual, we will meet in the "LRC" — the Learning Resources Centre, which is under the Britannia VPL library. As you're walking west toward the library, veer left, walk alongside the library, and you'll come to a ramp entry to the LRC on your right. Garden Club Invite: Denman Island Home and Garden Tour June 15-16 (Featuring the Garden of Des Kennedy)

I'm not sure if anyone has taken this tour of Denman Island gardens but it sounds intriquing!
For those not aware of where Denman is, you take a ferry from Horseshoe Bay in N. Vancouver over to Nanaimo on Vancouver Island.  From there you head up the Island about an hour to Fanny Bay where you catch the small ferry over to Denman Island.  During your visit you can also take a ferry off Denman Island over to Hornby Island, another BC jewel also known as the Hawaii of BC due to its beautiful beaches such as Tribune Bay.  There is lots of accommodation on both Islands as well as just north of Fanny Bay on the way to Courtenay/Comox.  It's a wonderful area to visit!
Hello,

I am hoping you can help us spread the word to your membership about this great event - an important fundraiser for the Denman Island Conservancy - protecting rare ecosystems on the island since 1991. We welcome garden clubs from all across BC - many choose to carpool or rent a charter bus for the event. Thank you for your consideration!

Denman Island Home and Garden Tour June 15-16, 2019

Tickets are now on sale for this enchanting Tour, deemed by the Globe & Mail "one of Canada's top six horticultural events."  Every two years this idyllic island throws open its garden gates, inviting the pubic for a rare up-close look at the creativity, skill and passion Denman residents pour into their properties.

The Denman Conservancy has declared 2019 to be The Year of the Wetland, and many of our extraordinary properties offer natural and man-made water features, creating complex, lively ecosystems. The famous Des Kennedy Garden is a major attraction again this year, and other highlights include an organic vineyard (with tasting room), a home build from creatively recycled components, a modern homestead and market garden, a couple of oceanfront west-coast architectural delights, and an island-style chocolate factory. Bloom lovers will not be disappointed, either - roses, lilies, and a whole host of other blossoms will be found in abundance.

This weekend event provides an unforgettable experience for lovers of gardens, homes and rural charm. Many people return year after year, and are never disappointed. Join them! Come for a day trip, or book into a cozy B&B and stay for the weekend.

Early bird tickets are $18, and can be purchased online at
 http://www.denman-conservancy.org/home-and-garden-tour/.

You can also find us (and Like us) on Facebook: www.facebook.com/DenmanIslandHomeAndGardenTour . Please help us spread the word about this great event.

Our speaker for March is Gwen Odermatt, a member of the Great Plant Picks group, and she will talk to us about the GPP program and tell us how its committees go about selecting the "great plants" that make it onto their short list.

Gwen last spoke to us in September 2015 about her own magnificent garden in South Langley and the perennials she grows there.

You're sure to enjoy this meeting. As usual, we will meet in the "LRC" — the Learning Resources Centre, which is under the Britannia VPL library. As you're walking west toward the library, veer left on the walkway, walk alongside the library, and you'll come to a ramp entry to the LRC on your right. We start at 7:00 and end before 9:00.

Our February Meeting ... Thursday, February 14th, 2019, 7:00 p.m.

Hello!

Celebrate Valentine's Day with your friends and neighbours at the Grandview Garden Club! Our speaker this month, suggested by Ann Daskal, is Conway Lum, and the topic of his talk — I know I will be interested in this! — is "Why Does My Fruit Tree Not Flower or Set Fruit?"

Have you ever wondered why your fruit tree is not doing what it's supposed to do? Please join us to welcome Conway Lum who will talk about fruit tree quirks. He will explain how to get the best from your fruit trees, how to care for them, how to prune them, and how to deal with pest and disease problems you might encounter.

If you have issues about or problems having to do with your own fruit trees, bring your questions! Samples of your tree or fruit are also welcome (although perhaps it won't be easy to obtain them at this time of year).

We always have tea and goodies and a few door prizes. Try to remember to bring your own teacup. Also, if you haven't renewed your membership for 2019, bring your $20 too!

See you there!

Cheers,
Penny Street
