Our February meeting, Thursday, Feb 9th

For Our February Meeting...

Under our deep snow, roses!

The speaker for our meeting this Thursday, February 9th, is rose expert Brad Jalbert, owner of Select Roses in Langley.

BIG IMPORTANT NOTICE: BRAD SAYS THAT IF THERE IS MORE SNOW AND FLOODING IN THE FRASER VALLEY WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY, HE WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE IT TO VANCOUVER FOR OUR MEETING! IF HE CAN'T COME AT THIS LAST MINUTE, WE'LL HAVE TO CANCEL THE MEETING. PLEASE CHECK THIS PAGE ON THURSDAY BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT!

Brad opened his rose nursery in 1990, featuring the best in garden roses, both old and new. His hybridizing program was started that first year and to date Brad has introduced more than a hundred roses, setting a Canadian record for the most rose introductions. In 2015, one of Brad’s new hybrids one two fragrance awards in Barcelona, Spain’s World Rose Trial competition. He is the first Canadian to ever win an international rose breeding award. His varieties are now in high demand worldwide and have been introduced on four continents making his rose breeding program the widest reaching in Canadian history. It should be noted that his Select Rose breeding program is funded 100% by the company he founded.

Brad has co-written two books on roses, Roses for British Columbia and Roses for Washington and Oregon. He has also written numerous articles for many Canadian garden magazines, and contributes articles to rose bulletins in Canada and USA. He has appeared as a guest on the Fanny Kiefer’s “Studio 4” cable show and David Tarrant’s “ Canadian Gardener” television series. He has worked extensively with BC Parks improving rose gardens and is passionate about seeing roses used in public “no-spray” parks.

His work in support of gardening merited him the BC Landscape & Nursery Association’s Garden Communicator of the Year Award in 2009. He is Past President and Life Member of the Vancouver Rose Society and past regional director of the Canadian Rose Society. Brad was extremely active in bringing the World Rose Convention and Festival to BC in 2009. Brad is a sought-after speaker, and his dedication, passion, and sense of humour have been enjoyed by audiences around the world.

Select Roses features a large display garden in Langley, British Columbia, attracting gardeners interested in high quality garden roses. The nursery is packed with thousands of potted roses starting spring of each year, closing in mid summer. The selection features roses hybridized by Brad as well as top roses from breeders around the world.

As usual, we will meet in the "LRC" — the Britannia Learning Resources Centre, which is under the VPL library. As you're walking toward the library, veer left, walk alongside it, and you'll come to a ramp entry to the LRC on your right. We start at 7:00 and end before 9:00.
Bring your gardening questions and concerns ... and your ideas for topics or speakers for upcoming meetings.

We always have tea and goodies and a few door prizes.
